What Exactly is Kinesiology?

The word Kinesiology (kin-easy-ology) means the study of motion. In particular, the study of how muscles act and coordinate to move the body. In the natural health field, Kinesiology uses muscles to monitor stress and imbalance within the body where 'Muscle Testing' is used for detecting and correcting. These imbalances may relate to emotional stress, nutrition or allergies, learning problems, injuries or pain.

The muscle test is actually monitoring the integrity of the electrical pathway from the brain to the muscle fibres. Our bodies are so finely tuned to respond to stimuli, that any stress on the body can be observed through the muscle test. Stressful thoughts, feelings, movements and substances (such as food or chemicals) result in the muscle failing to respond efficiently.

When the kinesiologist is presented with a muscle that fails the muscle test (we call it an "unlock"), specific healing techniques are used to strengthen the muscle (We call this a "Lock").

In the same way that stressful thoughts, feelings, movements and substances can cause a muscle to unlock, positive thoughts, feelings, movements and substances can create healing.

Though the concepts behind kinesiology can appear deceivingly simple, an experienced kinesiologist draws on not only scientific knowledge of how and why the body works, but they also rely on insights into the bigger pictures of our lives.

One of the greatest virtues of Kinesiology is its versatility. Every treatment is a unique assessment of your individual needs. Using muscle testing you are provided with the exact healing that your person requires; be it of a spiritual, emotional nature, a structural or physical nature, or of a nutritional or chemical nature. The healing provided is tailored specifically for you.

Giving a client the power to understand themselves, and methods to grow and change is what a kinesiology session is all about. Life just keeps getting better.

How did Kinesiology begin?

In the early 60’s an American Chiropractor, Dr George Goodheart began to use muscle testing to evaluate muscle function, posture and general body imbalances. He also researched corrective measures for these imbalances using the ancient wisdom of Chinese Philosophies, lymphatic points and blood flow through the brain. He called this Applied Kinesiology.

In the 70's Dr John Thie began teaching workshops called Touch For Health. Dr Thie made muscle testing and balancing available to people from all walks of life, not just doctors and chiropractors.

Over the years there have been many influential researchers and pioneers working under the Kinesiology umbrella and we have seen further development with the addition of other ancient wisdoms and vibrational energy healing techniques. As more and more research occurs this field will continue to develop.

In the 80's Dr. Bruce Dewe and Joan Dewe developed Professional Kinesiology Practice. Together they run the International College (ICPKP) from their base in Auckland, New Zealand. PKP offers people from all walks of life the opportunity to train as a professional and to become a highly effective and saught after practitioner.
